Book Culture

What is the role of the traditional publisher in society where Generative AI can write, edit and translate books? Where online platforms make it simple to self-publish? Where content creators connect with their community more than their publishers can? When the environmental impact of producing printed books results in cutting down millions of trees a year. And what happens to a culture when more books are being banned and less and less people spend time reading them, especially children? These are the questions I attempt to answer through my research to uplift and support the publishing industry. Publishing, has the power to shape society. So how the industry responds to these existential challenges - collectively - and the guardrails & solutions it develops will be influential to society as a whole. Collectively we can create change for good. Join my research initiatives here.

Generative AI Research

The invisible craft of talented writers, artists, editors, and translators has always been undervalued in our society, yet it is their expertise, skill and creativity that Generative AI was built upon. In a cruel plot twist, they now have the most to lose from the AI empire their work helped create. Or, with the unending onslaught of self-published titles and AI-manufactured sludge, is the gatekeeping and quality control of expert publishers, writers, editors and translators needed now more than ever?

How can AI be used ethically & sustainably to ensure the publishing industry and human creativity flourish? If you are interested in participating in my research, please complete this quick preliminary survey.

Sustainability in Book Publishing

Can book publishing be sustainable and profitable? Publishing is a dirty business, whether it’s printed book or ebooks. The industry has made monumental progress to reduce their carbon footprint in tandem with laws and policies around biomass reduction, emissions, etc. How can we keep up the momentum in the face increased AI use and backsliding of environmental protections? How can we create new jobs? How can we support diversity? How can we open minds to the climate crisis and inspire change? Publishing has a critical role in this conversation and can be a platform for change. Join me in going green. Complete my survey.

The Invisible Art of Content Editing

The role of development and substantive editing has been moved out of house in many publishers. In some cases, authors have to hire their own development editors. Editing is an art and a craft. What makes a good editor? What is their contribution to the final product? It is often invisible and hard to pinpoint. This also makes it easy to undervalue, dismiss or even replace with AI. I would like to make this work more visible. If you are a development editor or content editor, please join my research by completing this very short survey so that collectively we can support and advocate for human editors.

Teaching & Learning

I love metadata. I love P&Ls. I love spreadsheets. I love managing stock and reprints, and briefing complicated text designs. These are just a few of my favorite topics in publishing. My students love fan fiction, romantasy, graphic novels and BookTok. So my classes unite practical publishing skills with the books and genres my students are passionate about. Below are some of the core courses I currently teach at Emerson College. I was recently awarded a stipend from the college to develop a new course on AI & Sustainability in publishing in Spring 2026.
